Devils River

Host:  TBD

Date(s):  April 13-16, 2012

Description:  This is a trip to the Devils River in southwest Texas, about an hour north of Del Rio, for no more than seven participants. The Devils River is a spectacular and extremely remote destination with very limited public access. Because of this, we have made arrangements with Kevin Stubbs, a well-known Devils River guide and outfitter, who has arranged for access from private ranches that front the river.

On Friday, April 13, participants will drive to the Devils River State Natural Area, about six hours from Austin, where they will meet up with Kevin and another guide at 2 p.m. From there, the party will drive to a private lodge where they will stay for three nights. The party will fish the river all day Saturday and Sunday. The participants will return to Austin on Monday.

A float tube, kick boat, pontoon, or kayak will be required to fish the river. Participants will not be floating long distances, but will have access to enough of the river to thoroughly fish it with no more than one fishing partner.

A 4-wheel drive vehicle (4Runner class or better) is required to get to the river. In addition, a good spare tire or two, tools, etc., and other safety precautions are required due to the remoteness of the area. Participants can car pool, although shouldn't plan on more than 2 people per mid-size SUV or 3 people per full-size SUV, depending on the gear being carried.

Participants will stay in a lodge near the river and will be responsible for bringing their own provisions and preparing their own meals. It's anticipated that the AFF host of the outing will coordinate group morning and evening meals which will be prepared by all the participants. Individuals should plan to bring their own lunches and snacks.

The cost of the outing is $800 payable by February 18 to Kevin Stubbs. This fee includes lodging and guide services, but does not include food and travel. If you would like to participate in this outing, contact Dave Bush by email. Participation will be on a first-come first-serve basis. The fee is not refundable, but can be applied to a future trip if weather forces cancellation of the outing.

Location/Directions:  Here's a Google Map showing the meeting point at Devils River State Natural Area.

Lodging:  Participants will be staying in a private lodge included in the cost of the outing.

Meals:  Provided by the participants. Breakfasts and dinners will most likely be group meals coordinated by the host and lunches and snacks will be provided by each participant.

Watercraft:  A float tube, kick boat, pontoon, or kayak is necessary for the outing.

Gear:  A 6-8 weight fly rod and a reel loaded with floating line.
