The AFF have organized an outing to Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) from Sept 28- Oct 2. Because much of the property in this area has been damaged by the recent Hurricane Harvey, our plan will be somewhat flexible. For the past few years, we have camped at the Mustang Island State Park. At the present time the state park is closed, we therefore are planning to camp just beyond the 5 mile marker on Padre Island National Seashore. Two wheel drive cars can safely drive to this area. Driving any further south will require a 4×4 vehicle. It will be a good idea to stay flexible on this outing, because we never know what the weather, wind, turnout, etc. will be like. This is especially true this year because of the damage from the hurricane. Depending on the conditions, we may fish the shoreline along PINS, hike into Yarborough Pass to fish the bayside, or drive down to the Mansfield Jetty in 4x4s. Some of us may also bring kayaks and spend a day or two fishing the Laguna Madre (bayside). The Bird Island Basin boat ramp, located near the entrance to PINS, is a good kayak launch site.
The month of September coincides with the annual bait migration in the surf, and is a good time to target ladyfish, redfish, spanish mackerel, and the occasional tarpon pursuing bait near the beach.
Nils Pearson and Brandon Rabke will be hosting this trip. For more information, please contact us at outings.
